What is Vudu?

Vudu is a box. It is a service. Its a Tivo for the Internet.

That's it not much more you need to know. But of course, I'll tell you more if you are interested...

Vudu offers over 6,000 movies that can be downloaded over your broadband connection into the $299 Vudu Box. So what's different from Akimbo and the dozen other boxes that have come and gone in the marketplace?

1. These are recent movies most of them stuff that you actually want to see - not Turkish Television (sorry Akimbo). The reason have good content is that the company is supported by a bunch of studios. At least that can be assumed because they are all (15 of them actually) making their content available on Vudu. The exception is Sony, but perhaps by now they have come around.

2. They have $21 million in capital. 'Nuff said.

3. They have a good technology that (never mind their fanciful explanations and use of buzz words) pre-downloads content using progressive downloads. This means that you can watch something as soon as you choose it. From what I gather, it downloads a bit of everything and when you choose it, it brings that process to the top/front. Good technology, not Great.

4. They have an adult channel. Don't underestimate the power of this to market their box to their core market. Yes, the good old 18-35 male population who apparently have all the money in America.

More later...
